Kollam, Kerala – July 31, 2025: In a deeply disturbing case that has sparked widespread attention in Kerala and beyond, Anjana Satheesh, a 21 year old woman from Kollam, was found hanging in the room of her live in partner, Nihas, on July 29. The couple had been living together for the past six months after obtaining a court’s permission following opposition from Anjana’s family over their interfaith relationship.
The mysterious nature of her death, along with the social, communal, and legal layers attached, has led to a whirlwind of media coverage, online debates, and police scrutiny.
Anjana Satheesh was a young woman from Kollam, Kerala, who had been in a relationship with a Muslim man named Nihas. The two met during college and decided to move in together after continued resistance from Anjana’s Hindu family.
Anjana’s decision to pursue legal help to continue her relationship highlights the determination and agency she exercised in her personal life. Her plea was successful, and the court granted them the right to cohabit, asserting adult autonomy and the legality of consensual live in relationships.
Couple’s Life Before the Tragedy
Anjana Satheesh and Nihas had reportedly moved into a rented accommodation in Kollam six months ago. Neighbors described them as “quiet and reserved,” while others said the couple “rarely socialized but seemed normal.”
However, sources suggest Anjana had been under emotional stress recently. Close friends revealed that she felt isolated and pressured due to the lack of acceptance from her family. Yet, no one anticipated such a shocking end.
On the Day of Incident: What Happened in Reality?
On the morning of July 29, Nihas reportedly left for work early and returned in the afternoon to find Anjana Satheesh hanging from the ceiling fan with a dupatta. He immediately alerted neighbors and called the police.
Local authorities arrived and shifted her body to the district hospital for a postmortem. However, the circumstances surrounding her death have raised several questions:
No suicide note was found at the scene.
Her mobile phone was reportedly wiped clean.
Bruise marks were allegedly visible on her body, though the postmortem report is yet to be officially released.
Police Investigation Underway
Kollam police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 174 of the CrPC, pending the postmortem report and forensic findings. However, officials have not ruled out the possibility of abetment to suicide or foul play.
According to a police spokesperson, “We are thoroughly investigating all angles, including the mental health condition of the deceased, history of the relationship, and statements from the partner and friends.”
Both families have been questioned. While Anjana Satheesh’s family maintains suspicion over Nihas’ role, Nihas has claimed that Anjana was under extreme pressure from her parents and had expressed distress several times.
Public Reactions and Social Media Outrage
The tragic death of Anjana Satheesh has reignited debates over interfaith relationships, honor based violence, and women’s mental health.
On platforms like X (formerly Twitter), hashtags such as #JusticeForAnjanaSatheesh, #LoveJihad, began trending within hours. Netizens have been sharply divided:Some accuse Nihas of mental harassment and deceit.
Others point fingers at societal pressure and communal hatred that may have pushed Anjana to the edge.
A section of activists demand a thorough CBI investigation, citing the rising number of similar deaths in Kerala and other states.
India has long struggled with the societal acceptance of interfaith relationships, especially between Hindu women and Muslim men. In several parts of the country, couples face resistance from families, communities, and even law enforcement.
In recent years, the term “Love Jihad” has entered political discourse, further polarizing public opinion. Anjana Satheesh’s case now joins a disturbing list of similar stories where young women pursuing interfaith love either face institutional pushback or end up in suspicious deaths.
While it is premature to jump to conclusions, the death of Anjana Satheesh must not be allowed to fade from public memory without answers. Whether it was a suicide driven by mental pressure or an orchestrated act, the truth must come out.
The Kerala Women’s Commission has taken suo moto cognizance of the incident and requested a detailed report from local authorities within 7 days.
As the investigation continues, the tragedy of Anjana Satheesh serves as a grim reminder of the societal barriers and emotional toll that young people, especially women, face in asserting their choices.
