Patna: As Bihar eagerly awaits the completion of the Bihta International Airport, a strong public demand has emerged that the facility be named after Babu Veer Kunwar Singh, the legendary freedom fighter of the 1857 revolt. Citizens, social groups, and community leaders argue that this would be a fitting tribute to the warrior who led from the front at the age of 80 and remains a symbol of courage for Bihar and the nation.
Why in the Name of Babu Veer Kunwar Singh?
Babu Veer Kunwar Singh was born in Jagdishpur, Bhojpur, in 1777. At the age of 80, he led armed resistance against the British during the First War of Independence in 1857. His extraordinary courage and guerrilla tactics made him one of the most feared leaders of the uprising. In one legendary act, when injured by a bullet while crossing the Ganga, he cut off his own arm and offered it to the river, continuing to lead his troops with undiminished spirit. Naming Bihta Airport after Babu Veer Kunwar Singh would immortalize his heroism and ensure his sacrifice remains alive in public memory.

Land Contribution by the Kshatriya Community
Local voices & people’s at national level highlight a crucial fact: nearly 95% of the land for Bihta Airport was given by the Kshatriya community, amounting to around 2,400 bighas. This massive contribution of agricultural land underscores the community’s commitment to the development of Bihar. Since Babu Veer Kunwar Singh himself was a Kshatriya and a symbol of sacrifice, naming the airport after him would honor both the community’s land contribution and Bihar’s historical pride.
