New Delhi: A major controversy has erupted following CJI BR Gavai remarks on Lord Vishnu during a hearing on the restoration of a damaged idol at the historic Javari Temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. Several citizens and advocates have expressed outrage, filing petitions with the President of India demanding a public apology, resignation, or even impeachment proceedings against the Chief Justice of India.
The controversy began when a Hindu petitioner sought the restoration of a seven foot tall idol of Lord Vishnu that was beheaded during the Mughal invasions. The petitioner argued that the idol’s restoration was not just about archaeology but also about faith, as the failure to repair it infringed upon devotees’ fundamental right to worship.
However, during the hearing, CJI BR Gavai remarks on Lord Vishnu were perceived as insensitive. He reportedly told the petitioner, “Go and ask your Lord Vishnu to do something. You say you are his staunch devotee, so go and pray.” The bench led by the Chief Justice rejected the plea, sparking widespread criticism.
Advocates Demand Action
Advocate Vineet Jindal has already petitioned the President of India as well as CJI BR Gavai, calling the remarks derogatory and disrespectful towards Hindu sentiments. He urged the authorities to ensure the dignity of every faith is preserved. Jindal also sent a copy of his complaint to the Supreme Court.
Advocate Vineet Jindal wrote in his X post, “Being a follower of Sanatan Dharma, I had sent a letter to the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Justice B R Gavai, demanding the immediate withdrawal of his hurtful remarks against Lord Vishnu and Hindu sentiments. A copy of the letter has also been sent to the Hon’ble President of India @rashtrapatibhvn to ensure this matter receives national attention. I hope the Supreme Court and president of India takes this seriously and upholds the dignity of every faith in India.”
Similarly, Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput addressed an open letter to the Chief Justice, urging him to reconsider his words. He appealed to CJI Gavai to withdraw his statement and issue a public clarification to calm the growing outrage.
Historical and Cultural Context
The Javari Temple, where the idol of Lord Vishnu lies vandalized, is part of the Khajuraho temple complex – a UNESCO World Heritage Site constructed by the Chandela Rajput kings. Devotees argue that restoring the idol is crucial to preserving India’s cultural and religious heritage.
The demand for restoration has been pending for years, with repeated appeals made to authorities. Petitioners insist that the damaged idol must be restored not just for archaeological value but to protect the sanctity of worship and the faith of millions of devotees.
As protests and petitions continue to mount, the controversy over CJI BR Gavai remarks on Lord Vishnu has raised serious questions about judicial sensitivity towards religious sentiments and cultural heritage in India.
