Kamal Haasan remarks on Mahabharata

An old interview of actor turned politician Kamal Haasan has resurfaced online, sparking renewed outrage over his controversial views on the Mahabharata. In the viral clip, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief and Rajya Sabha MP can be heard making remarks that critics say indirectly justify sexual predators while blaming Hindu epics for crimes against women.

During the program, when asked about the increasing crimes against women, Haasan pointed to the Mahabharata as a problematic cultural example. He stated, “We should not blame rapists because what examples have we given them? Mahabharata. You have given them an example where you can gamble your wife. You have given them the wrong story to follow. You have made it a holy book now.”

These Kamal Haasan Mahabharata remarks quickly triggered backlash, with many calling them an insult to Hindu traditions and epics revered by millions. Several critics accused him of deflecting blame from perpetrators of heinous crimes while targeting religious texts.

Reports suggest that following these comments, multiple legal cases were filed against Haasan in places such as Tirunelveli and Bengaluru. At the time, Hindu groups and political rivals condemned him, accusing the actor-politician of hurting religious sentiments for political mileage.

He can say this in a Hindu-majority country without consequence. But try saying the same when they're in minority. Irony is, Mahabharata never endorses such acts, while his own desert cult explicitly promotes it. pic.twitter.com/5HjBeZmcST

The controversy has now resurfaced on social media, reigniting debates about freedom of expression, religion, and accountability. Supporters of Haasan argue that he highlighted how cultural narratives shape societal behavior, while detractors insist his comments demean sacred epics and trivialize crimes against women.

As the clip goes viral again, the Kamal Haasan Mahabharata remarks continue to divide public opinion, once again putting the veteran actor at the center of a heated national controversy.
