
New Delhi – The Ministry of Education has officially released the much awaited NIRF India Rankings 2025 on September 4, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The event was graced by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Minister for Education, who unveiled the 10th edition of the rankings that evaluate the performance of higher education institutions across India.
Once again, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has secured the top position in the NIRF India Rankings 2025 (Overall category), reaffirming its dominance in academic excellence, research output, and innovation. Following IIT Madras, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and IIT Bombay claimed the second and third spots respectively.

About NIRF India Rankings 2025
The NIRF India Rankings 2025 represent the government’s comprehensive evaluation of institutions across multiple parameters such as teaching, learning, resources, research, professional practices, outreach, inclusivity, and perception. This year’s rankings were released in nine categories – Overall, Universities, Colleges, Research Institutions, Innovation, State Public Universities, Open Universities, Skill Universities, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Additionally, performance in eight subject domains – Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture & Planning, Law, Dental, and Agriculture & Allied Sectors – was also assessed to give a holistic picture of India’s higher education landscape.
