Sydney, October 27, 2025: India’s ODI vice captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalised in Sydney after suffering a spleen injury during the final One Day International (ODI) against Australia. The incident occurred when Iyer took a stunning catch running backward from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey. In the process, he appeared to hurt his left rib cage, later diagnosed as a spleen related injury causing internal bleeding.

According to reports, Shreyas Iyer was hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) soon after returning to the dressing room, as his vital parameters showed instability. The BCCI medical team acted swiftly, ensuring immediate medical intervention. A source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed PTI that internal bleeding was detected following detailed medical tests.

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. Internal bleeding was found, and he had to be admitted immediately. He will remain under observation for two to seven days depending on recovery,” said a source close to the team management.

Shreyas Iyer hospitalised update has left fans and teammates concerned, though sources confirm that his condition is stable. Doctors have cautioned that a spleen injury can be serious, as the spleen is a soft, blood rich organ located below the ribs on the left side of the abdomen. Even minor trauma can lead to significant internal bleeding, making such injuries potentially life threatening.

Medical experts explain that spleen injuries can sometimes appear mild externally but carry serious internal risks. The spleen filters blood and helps the body fight infection, and any damage to it requires careful monitoring.

The situation draws a parallel to Amitabh Bachchan’s 1982 “Coolie” accident, where a similar impact to the left abdomen led to a life threatening spleen rupture. That incident also required extensive hospitalization and multiple surgeries.

For Shreyas Iyer, doctors have advised rest and close monitoring. He is expected to stay in Sydney’s hospital for at least a week before being declared fit to travel back to India. Initial assessments suggest a recovery period extending beyond the previously estimated three weeks, as internal healing may take longer in such cases.

“Since there has been internal bleeding, it’s difficult to give a definite timeline for his return to competitive cricket,” another BCCI source said.

Shreyas Iyer has been a consistent performer for India in the ODI format. He was not part of India’s ongoing T20 squad, which means his immediate focus will be on recovery and rehabilitation. Shreyas Iyer hospitalised news has prompted an outpouring of support from fans and fellow cricketers across social media, wishing him a speedy recovery.

While the situation was serious initially, medical reports now indicate stability, and the Indian team management has expressed optimism about his recovery.
