A honeymoon trip turned tragic for an Indore couple when 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi was found murdered in Meghalaya, and his wife, Sonam, remains missing.
The couple had embarked on their honeymoon to Sohra (Cherrapunjee), Meghalaya, and were last seen on May 23 after checking out from a local homestay. Their rented scooter was later discovered abandoned near Osara Hills in Sohra Rim, an area known for safety concerns.
On June 3, Raja’s decomposed body was recovered from a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in the East Khasi Hills district. Police confirmed that he was murdered with a ‘dao’ (a type of machete), which was found at the scene. His mobile phone was also retrieved, but his valuables were missing.
Prior to their disappearance, Sonam made a final call to her mother-in-law, subtly indicating potential danger by mentioning she would not break her fast—a statement now seen as a distress signal.
The East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, has prioritized the investigation. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is assisting in the search for Sonam, utilizing drones and other resources. However, search efforts are being hampered by heavy rains and challenging terrain.
Raja’s family has expressed deep anguish over the incident and is demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. They have also announced a ₹5 lakh reward for any information leading to Sonam’s whereabouts.
This tragic incident has raised concerns about tourist safety in Meghalaya, especially in regions known for their challenging landscapes. Authorities urge travelers to exercise caution and stay informed about local conditions when visiting remote areas.
As the investigation continues, the nation watches closely, hoping for answers and justice for Raja Raghuvanshi and the safe return of Sonam.
