Guwahati, Assam – July 31, 2025: In a heart-wrenching incident that has sparked outrage across Assam and social media platforms, popular Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap was arrested late Tuesday night for her alleged involvement in a hit and run case that resulted in the death of a 21 year old male college student. The victim, identified as Rituraj Das, a final year undergraduate student of Cotton University in Guwahati, succumbed to his injuries after being struck by a speeding car driven by Kashyap.

CCTV Footage Confirms Overspeeding and Recklessness

According to the preliminary report issued by the Assam Police, CCTV footage clearly shows Nandini Kashyap’s SUV overspeeding along the GS Road area near Ganeshguri at around 10:45 PM on Monday. The vehicle struck Rituraj, who was reportedly returning to his hostel after a tuition session.

Shocking details from the footage reveal that Kashyap did not stop to check on the victim or call for help after the accident. The SUV fled the scene within seconds of the collision, and the bystanders were left stunned and scrambling to assist the severely injured youth.

Eyewitnesses Recall the Tragedy

“We heard a loud thud and turned around to see a young man lying on the road. The car didn’t stop even for a second. It was going way too fast.”

Locals immediately rushed Rituraj to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), but despite emergency treatment efforts, he was declared dead on arrival. The post-mortem report confirms multiple fractures, internal bleeding, and head trauma as the cause of death.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Within hours of the incident, police traced the vehicle using CCTV surveillance and vehicle registration data. The SUV, a white Range Rover, is registered in Nandini Kashyap’s name. The actress was arrested from her residence in Zoo Road around 2 AM on Tuesday.

Assam DGP GP Singh confirmed the arrest, stating that a case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) and Section 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against her. Additional charges may be added based on toxicology and driving license verification reports.

We have strong visual and circumstantial evidence. No one is above the law,” said DCP East Guwahati, Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

Public Outrage and Calls for Justice

News of the incident has sent shockwaves across Assam, especially among the student community. #JusticeForRituraj has been trending on X (formerly Twitter), with many demanding a speedy trial and stringent punishment.

Several users condemned celebrity privilege and expressed concern that Nandini Kashyap may be granted bail or released after issuing a mere apology letter, which often happens in high profile cases.

“She killed someone and didn’t even stop. This cannot be brushed under the carpet. Apology letters cannot bring back lives,” wrote one user.

“The life of a 21 year old boy ended, and if she walks free after a bail plea, it will be an insult to justice,” said another post that received over 20,000 likes.

Who Was Rituraj Das?

Rituraj Das was a brilliant economics student at Cotton University and an aspiring civil services candidate. His professors described him as “intelligent, humble, and full of promise.” His family, hailing from Barpeta, had high hopes for his future.

His grieving mother, speaking to a local reporter, said,

“We sent him to the city to study and make something of himself. We never imagined he would return to us like this.”

About Nandini Kashyap

Nandini Kashyap is a well.known figure in Assamese cinema and television. She gained fame for her lead roles in several Bihu music videos and regional films. With a massive fan following, she has often represented Assamese culture on national platforms.

This incident has now cast a dark shadow over her career and public image.

Legal Proceedings and Next Steps

Kashyap has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days, and her driving license has been seized. The police have ordered a blood test to determine whether alcohol or any substance was involved.

Sources indicate that top criminal lawyers have been hired by her family, but the case is likely to be closely monitored by civil rights activists and media outlets across the country.

If proven guilty, she could face up to two years of imprisonment, fines, or both under IPC 304A. Activists are demanding the case be treated as culpable homicide not amounting to murder instead of negligence, given the recklessness and absence of remorse.

The tragic death of Rituraj Das is not just an isolated incident it reflects a larger issue of reckless driving, celebrity entitlement, and lack of accountability. The public now looks to Assam’s judiciary and law enforcement agencies to deliver justice without bowing to influence.

As Nandini Kashyap’s fate awaits the courtroom, Rituraj’s dreams have been crushed permanently, and his family continues to mourn the loss of their only son.
