Finland is inviting 16 international singles to join a four-day food and travel experience in February 2027, with a group dinner date in Helsinki or Tampere.

The campaign is real, but some headlines can leave the wrong impression. Finland is not offering a permanent move, a matchmaking service or an invitation specifically for men. It is a tourism promotion called Finnish Dinner Date, built around Finnish food, travel and meeting new people. Romance is possible, but not guaranteed.

Is Finland’s invitation an official government programme?

Yes with an important distinction. The invitation comes from Visit Finland, the country’s tourism-promotion body. Visit Finland is part of Business Finland, which is owned by the Finnish state. The wider “Have some Finnish” food campaign is part of a food-sector growth programme funded by Finland’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. That makes this an official, publicly backed tourism campaign; it does not make it a government dating or immigration programme.

The official campaign page says 16 selected participants will take part in hosted four-day experiences between February 9 and 19, 2027. Eight will be assigned to Helsinki and eight to Tampere, in Finland’s Lakeland region. At each group dinner, the international visitors will meet two local Finnish singles.

Why is Finland inviting singles?

The stated goal is to introduce international visitors to Finnish food and encourage interest in Finland as a travel destination. Visit Finland says Finnish cuisine is not as widely known internationally as other European and Nordic food traditions. The dinner is part of its broader food-tourism campaign, which spotlights regional dishes and tasting menus.

The dating angle adds a social twist. Visit Finland says the idea was inspired in part by the “sinkkukori,” or “single basket” trend: pink shopping baskets used in some Finnish shops as a playful way for single shoppers to signal that they are open to meeting someone. The campaign turns that idea into a hosted group meal for visitors and local singles.

In short, the campaign’s stated purpose is tourism and food promotion. The possibility of a romantic connection is part of the appeal, not a promised outcome.

Who can apply, and what are the steps?

Forbes reports that applications are open to single adults aged 18 or older from around the world, excluding Finnish citizens and residents. Applicants enter individually; the invitation is not a free trip for a couple or a group of friends. The official campaign page gives the application instructions and deadline. (Forbes; Visit Finland application details)

To apply:

Record a short video in English answering: “What would you serve on a dinner date, and why?”

Post it on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube with #FinnishDinnerDate, and tag Visit Finland’s account for that platform.

Complete the application form on Visit Finland’s website and include the video link.

Instagram and TikTok entries must be posted from public accounts so the organisers can view them. YouTube videos may be public or unlisted. Applications close on November 10, 2026, at 11:59 a.m. Finnish time 3:29 p.m. in India. Visit Finland says selected participants will be contacted and announced on its social channels on December 1. Applicants should check the official page for the latest rules before submitting.

What does the trip cover and do friends benefit too?

The selected participants receive a hosted four-day itinerary. Forbes reports that Visit Finland will cover round-trip travel, accommodation, meals and scheduled activities. The programme includes food and cultural experiences, with a group tasting-menu dinner at its centre. Winners are assigned to Helsinki or Tampere; they do not choose the destination. Forbes also notes that the dinner is a group event, not a series of one-to-one dates, and that Visit Finland does not promise a romantic match. (Forbes)

There is no automatic place or paid trip for a friend. A friend who is eligible could submit a separate application, but there are only 16 places, and there is no guarantee that two friends would both be selected or assigned to the same city. The campaign describes a travel experience, not a cash prize or a benefit available to every applicant.

The direct benefits go to the selected visitors: a hosted trip, Finnish food and cultural experiences, and the chance to meet other participants and local singles. Local guests may also enjoy meeting visitors from abroad. Finland’s tourism sector gains international attention for its cuisine and destinations, although the campaign does not promise a specific financial return or measure a direct benefit for every resident.

Is Finland trying to attract single men because there are more women?

There is no evidence for that explanation. The campaign is advertised for singles, not specifically for men. Its official materials do not say it was created to address a male–female population gap. Instead, Visit Finland describes it as part of a food and tourism campaign.

The latest annual figures on Statistics Finland’s population page report 5,652,881 residents at the end of 2025. Its population table counts 2,799,212 males and 2,853,669 females a difference of 54,457. That is about 49.5% male and 50.5% female, or approximately 98 males for every 100 females. (Statistics Finland, population by sex)

That is a modest numerical difference across the entire population, not proof of an unequal dating market. The total includes children and older people, and it does not tell us how many residents are single, who is looking to date, or whom they are interested in dating. Those details matter far more to someone’s dating opportunities than the countrywide headcount alone. Nor does a difference in population counts, by itself, show whether people have equal rights or opportunities.

What the announcement really means

Finland’s Finnish Dinner Date is an official, state-backed tourism promotion that uses food and social connection to attract attention. Sixteen selected international singles can receive a hosted trip; friends do not automatically join, and nobody is guaranteed a romantic match. The available population figures show somewhat more females than males overall, but they do not explain the campaign and there is no indication that it targets single men.
