A tragic case from Jhansi has once again brought the spotlight on the growing trend of live-in relationships in India. Meenu Prajapati, 38, a beautician, died by suicide after years of being in a live-in arrangement with her partner Irfan. The two had known each other for 16 years. Meenu was briefly married in 2012, but her marriage ended within six months. She then chose to live with Irfan, who was already married.
According to reports, Irfan had promised to marry her, but recently tied the knot with a second wife instead. This betrayal reportedly led to tensions between the couple. Following a heated argument, Meenu ended her life. Her story highlights not only the personal struggles inside such arrangements but also raises a larger question: why are some women choosing live in relationships over marriage in today’s society?
Shifting Mindsets and Freedom of Choice
In urban and semi-urban India, live in relationships are increasingly being viewed as an alternative to traditional marriage. Many women prefer them because they provide freedom, flexibility, and personal space. Unlike marriage, which carries legal, social, and cultural obligations, live in arrangements allow individuals to test compatibility before making a lifelong commitment.

However, as seen in Meenu’s tragic story, live in relationships come with their own risks. Lack of legal recognition in many situations, emotional exploitation, and uncertainty about the future can leave women vulnerable. Promises of marriage often remain unfulfilled, leading to heartbreak and, in some cases, devastating consequences.
As I’m observing past few years the cases of live in relationships is increasing day by day which also leads to the reason of increasing suicide as well as of murders. This can be the worst and tragic situation in the Society.
