In a landmark decision for global sport, Amdavad (Ahmedabad) has been formally ratified as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, coinciding with the centenary celebration of the event. The approval came during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, where delegates from 74 member nations and territories voted in favour of India’s bid. This marks a major milestone in India’s long term ambition to establish itself as a world class multi sport hub.
The confirmation makes India — the world’s most populous nation — the venue for one of the most significant editions in the history of the Games. India’s proposal showcased a strong vision for hosting, with a plan centred around Ahmedabad’s expanding sports infrastructure and cultural heritage. The bid also emphasised continuity, building upon the foundations that will be laid through the upcoming Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
A Cultural Showcase at the Assembly
Moments after Ahmedabad’s selection was announced, the General Assembly Hall was treated to a vibrant cultural performance. Twenty Garba dancers and thirty Indian dhol drummers, many from Glasgow’s Indian community and other Commonwealth nations, delivered an energetic presentation that reflected Gujarat’s cultural roots. The performance offered delegates a glimpse of the colour, unity, and festive spirit that athletes and spectators can anticipate in 2030.
Garba a traditional dance form originating in Gujarat set the tone for the beginning of the journey from Glasgow 2026 to Amdavad (Ahmedabad) 2030. The showcase reinforced the symbolic diversity and togetherness that underpin the Commonwealth Movement.
Leadership Welcomes a New Era for Commonwealth Sport
Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, described the moment as the beginning of “a new golden era” for the Games. He noted that after a strategic “reset,” the organisation was well positioned to deliver Glasgow 2026 successfully and then shift focus to the Centenary Games in India. He highlighted India’s “scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, sporting passion and relevance” as key strengths behind the bid.
Dr. P.T. Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, expressed gratitude for the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. She said the 2030 Games would both honour the last hundred years of the Movement and help shape its next century. The event, she said, would bring together athletes and communities from diverse backgrounds in a shared spirit of progress.
Sports Programme: What to Expect in 2030
Alongside the host city announcement, Commonwealth Sport also confirmed that 15–17 sports will be included at Amdavad 2030. The final sports programme will be developed collaboratively between the host organisers, the International Federations and Commonwealth Sport, with the goal of ensuring both global competitiveness and local relevance.
The core sports already confirmed include:

The host nation also has the option to propose up to two traditional or new sports.
Athletes React to the Announcement
Scottish swimmer and multiple Commonwealth champion Duncan Scott welcomed the decision and said he looked forward to seeing young Indian athletes compete on home soil. Indian World Champion boxer Jaismine Lamboria called it a proud moment and said competing at home in 2030 would inspire a new generation of athletes.
A Transformative Opportunity for India
The 2030 Commonwealth Games are expected to further strengthen India’s sporting ecosystem, drive infrastructure growth in Gujarat, and position Amdavad as a global destination for international events. As preparations begin, the Centenary Games promise to blend world class competition with India’s cultural vibrancy offering a memorable milestone in the Commonwealth’s 100 year journey.
