An Indian-Australian family in Brisbane is reportedly considering leaving its home and returning to India after an alleged racist incident at a residential complex left them concerned for their safety.

Police allege that 19-year-old Harley Adams directed racist insults at the family and threatened to “blow up” the Morningside unit block in the early hours of Monday, October 19. Adams appeared before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 21, charged with offences involving threats and serious vilification or hate crime.

Accused granted bail with electronic monitoring

Adams was granted bail subject to conditions intended to keep him away from the people and location involved in the allegations. According to ABC News, he must wear an electronic monitoring device, stay away from the Morningside unit complex and its residents, and report to a local police station three times a week.

Magistrate Peter Saggers warned the accused that courts take threats of violence seriously. The case was adjourned until November 16, 2026.

Police describe alleged incident as a racist outburst

Police prosecutor Sergeant Matt Kahler described the alleged episode in court as an “extraordinary racist outburst”. Prosecutors alleged Adams wrongly believed the family had complained about him and that the complaint had led to his eviction.

The court heard that Adams became apologetic after being told that the family had not made such a complaint. Police also alleged that other residents in the unit complex had been breaking their leases and moving out because of his behaviour.

Family reportedly weighing whether to leave Australia

The family is reportedly considering ending its rental lease and returning to India because of fears for its safety. The reported decision underlines how alleged threats can affect not only the people directly targeted but also other residents who share the same building.

The family’s identities have not been included here. The allegations against Adams have not been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

What happens next?

Adams is due back before the court on November 16. His bail conditions require electronic monitoring, exclusion from the residential complex and its residents, and regular reporting to police while proceedings continue.
