In what could become one of the most high profile player trades in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are in advanced negotiations for a potential swap between Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson, according to Cricbuzz reports.
While such a move once seemed far-fetched, sources now confirm that the trade discussions have entered the realm of active negotiations. Both Jadeja and Samson are valued at ₹18 crore each, making the deal financially feasible for both franchises. However, the trade has reportedly hit a roadblock Rajasthan Royals are said to be insisting on the inclusion of South African youngster Dewald Brevis, a demand that could prove to be a deal breaker.
Core of the Negotiations
CSK, led by MS Dhoni, are reportedly open to parting ways with their star all rounder Ravindra Jadeja after years of speculation about his future with the franchise. However, the Chennai management remains firm that no additional player will be part of the trade package. For CSK, Jadeja’s contribution both with bat and ball remains unmatched, and including Brevis, a rising global T20 star, would be seen as giving up too much value.
On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals’ management, led by UK based owner Manoj Badale, is steering the discussions from Mumbai. The Royals see Sanju Samson as their long term leader but are exploring the option of strengthening their all round capabilities by bringing in Jadeja, one of the world’s premier all rounders and a proven match winner in high pressure situations.
However, RR’s insistence on adding Dewald Brevis who joined CSK midway through last season and has since impressed in global T20 leagues has complicated the deal. Brevis recently fetched a record bid from Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 auction, underscoring his rising stock in franchise cricket.
Other Teams in the Mix
Rajasthan Royals are also believed to have reached out to other franchises, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders, as part of their wider trade discussions. However, early indications suggest that Sunrisers Hyderabad are not particularly interested in Samson. The Hyderabad side already has a settled top order with Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan, while Heinrich Klaasen remains their key middle order anchor.
Current Status
As things stand, the ball is in Rajasthan Royals’ court. Chennai Super Kings have reportedly consulted Jadeja before initiating the trade talks, reflecting their transparent approach. But with the franchise unwilling to part with Brevis, RR must now decide whether a straight swap Jadeja for Samson is acceptable.
Opinion
If this trade materializes, it could reshape the balance of both sides. Rajasthan Royals would gain a world class all rounder who brings immense experience and tactical awareness a perfect fit for their middle order and spin friendly home conditions. CSK, on the other hand, would acquire a dynamic wicketkeeper batsman and captain in Sanju Samson, potentially setting the stage for a long term leadership transition post Dhoni.
However, given the current deadlock over Dewald Brevis, the trade remains uncertain. Unless one side softens its stance, this blockbuster swap might remain one of those “almost happened” moments in IPL history talked about for years, but never realized.
