Vadodara, Gujarat: Gujarat’s cultural capital Vadodara has added another milestone to its long association with Garba. A massive Garba performance involving more than 46,818 participants has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest Garba dance.
The record was achieved during the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Garba event organised by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), with people from Vadodara taking part in the collective performance.
Vadodara creates Guinness World Record with 46,818+ participants
The Guinness World Records certificate for the event states that the largest Garba dance was achieved by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation and the people of Vadodara at M.M. Patel Farm in Vadodara, Gujarat, on October 7, 2026.
The scale of the gathering turned the traditional Gujarati dance into a huge collective celebration, bringing tens of thousands of participants together at one venue. The achievement also underlines the popularity of Garba as a living cultural tradition that continues to draw participation across generations.
Garba of Gujarat has UNESCO recognition
Vadodara’s Guinness record comes against the backdrop of growing international recognition for Gujarat’s Garba tradition. UNESCO inscribed Garba of Gujarat on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023. The decision was taken at the 18th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee in December 2023.
UNESCO describes Garba as a ritualistic and devotional dance associated with Navaratri and the worship of feminine energy, or Shakti. The traditional form involves dancers moving in a circle around a central lamp or an image of the goddess Amba, accompanied by singing and clapping.
The organisation has also noted that Garba is transmitted across generations through practice, performance, observation and imitation, with the tradition continuing to evolve while retaining its cultural and devotional character.
Vadodara’s long association with Garba
Vadodara has become synonymous with large-scale Garba celebrations, particularly during Navaratri. The city’s public Garba events attract large crowds every year and have helped establish Vadodara as one of the most prominent destinations for experiencing Gujarat’s traditional dance.
The latest Guinness World Record gives that cultural identity another global milestone. With more than 46,818 people participating in a single Garba performance, the event demonstrates how a centuries-old tradition can continue to command mass participation in modern India.
